US Open champion Alexander Zverev was pushed to the limit but progressed to the round of 16 at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters with a hard-fought win. On a day when top American contenders Ben Shelton and Francis Tiafoe exited, Zverev’s tenacity kept his season’s momentum alive.
Zverev Prevails in Grueling Contest
Facing Quentin Halys, Alexander Zverev came through 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3, marking his 60th tour victory this season. Zverev took advantage early, breaking Halys in the opener, but the match tightened as the Frenchman battled back. In the second set tiebreak, Zverev saw two match points slip away, with Halys clinching the set on his own chance at the net. Zverev regrouped and broke Halys early in the deciding set to clinch victory, extending his unbeaten run against Halys to 4-0 this year.
American Hopes Dashed in Third Round
US Open finalist Ben Shelton and seventh seed Francis Tiafoe both suffered close defeats. Shelton fell to France’s Arthur Gea, losing two tiebreak sets, while Tiafoe was edged by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a contest that also required a third-set tiebreak. Despite having match points, both Americans were unable to advance, ending their singles campaigns in Shanghai.
Tournament Outlook
Zverev will next face Alexander Bublik, who rallied past Brandon Nakashima in three sets. Meanwhile, other seeds like Alex de Minaur and Karen Khachanov advanced with straight-sets wins. With No.1 Jannik Sinner withdrawing due to knee injury, Zverev remains among the tournament frontrunners as the event moves into the round of 16.
